How To Create A Strength Training Program For A Beginner

A question I am sometimes asked is how do you know where to start with a beginner to strength training. With a beginner you want to assess their current level of movement efficiency to determine where to start. Do you need to help them learn how to move better or are they already moving well and need load to strengthen their body? As you can imagine it is near impossible to have a template that will apply to every person for there are so many variables to consider such as previous injuries, current injuries, what job or sport do they play, health considerations, age etc. What I like to do is use a relatively simple functional movement as the “ideal exercise” for each of the 7 fundamental movement patterns and then either work backwards to a regression if it is too hard or work forwards with a progression if it is too easy.

How Often Should You Change Your Strength Training Workout?

This is a question I am regularly asked, and like many things to do with health and fitness there is no definitive answer that works for everyone. Some people will do better changing workouts regularly, whereas others will see poor results from continual change and need to stick to the same program for a longer period of time. It all depends on the person’s goals, the objective of the workout, and the ability and skill of the person working out. Beginners will often benefit from sticking to the same program for a while and remaining consistent with the same exercises so they can learn from their mistakes. Whereas, more advanced trainers will see better results with more constant change to avoid falling into a plateau. Too much, or too little change can have a negative effect on the training results, so trying to find the perfect balance is important. In this article, I will try to explain how I know when to change the workout and some little tricks to add subtle changes to your workout without changing the whole program.

When Should You Focus More On Cardio Training To Get Fit?

This is a really interesting question and one that I am regularly asked by people looking to get in good shape. Unfortunately, like nearly every question about health and fitness the answer I usually give is, it depends. We are all individually unique with our needs and where we are at with our health and fitness journey so the timing of when to really up the intensity with your cardio training efforts will vary significantly from person to person. You have to appreciate that this type of training is very stressful to the body and problems can easily arise if you are not moving correctly to begin with, or if you have significant weaknesses present. I have found that cardio training tends to be highly over-rated in terms of the rewards it provides to the body and as a result it is regularly over-used and even abused often leading to chronic injuries that could have been avoided if a better plan was put in place. In this article, I will explain how I know when the time is right to shift my training focus to higher intensity type of cardiovascular training.

How Fast We Lose Muscle & The Serious Consequences It Poses To Your Health

A question I am often asked is what happens to your muscles when you stop working out for a long period of time? The answer depends on quite a few things such as age, your current training ability your current level of strength, and what was the reason you stopped training was. If you stopped from a lack of motivation then you can regain your strength much faster than if it was from a serious injury or disease that left you immobilized. In a perfect world you will never stop strength training for it is so hard to rebuild than it is to maintain muscles but sometimes things happen that are out of your control that force you to stop. This is why I always say one of the most important things you can ever do for your health is remain consistent with strength training for a long time to build up a high reserve for the speed at which you can lose muscle is astonishingly fast. It is quite unfair really, for it can take months to build muscle but sometimes as little as 10 days to lose significant strength as I will show you. Females, and the older population will lose muscle even faster and the implications to the health of their body is significant once they have lost too much.

What Is The Optimal Length Of Time That A Strength Training Workout Should Last?

This is an interesting question for there are many different ways I could answer this. Like most things with health and fitness there is no definitive only way to achieve good results and this is a classic example. Some people believe more is better and a workout is not worth it until you have worked out for 60-90 minutes, developed a massive sweat, and feel totally exhausted. Whereas, others think that 30 minutes is all you need and it is more about quality than quantity. The answer lies somewhere in between the two but in a way both assumptions are correct. It all depends on the type of workout you are completing, and what the objective of the training session is. In this article, I will try to explain the different types of workout objectives and how long a session should last depending on the training goal in mind to maximize your time and effort.

How To Structure An Effective Strength Program Using Multi-joint Exercises?

The last few years I have written articles and filmed You Tube videos showcasing some complex functional multi-joint exercises where I explain the purpose of the exercises and how to do them. What I did not explain fully is how you would organize them into a strength workout effectively so you ensure you keep everything balanced and avoid over-training. While it is great to know how to do these exercises you can create problems if you do not know how to structure your training schedule and program. Program design is a real science in itself when you really understand certain principles around movement and the human anatomy. It can be constant balancing act between using certain muscles too much and creating stiffness and injury, versus not using them enough and creating weakness injury. A great program can avoid this. If you have tried completing several sets of these exercises you will soon realize they are extremely exhausting and very difficult to do too many of them effectively in one workout. Secondly, while these exercises are very good at trying to use the body the way it was designed, they will often require regressions to help the body restore mobility, stability, or strength to specific areas that are restricted or inhibited. The needs and abilities of each person will vary significantly from one to the next so it is impossible to provide a template that works for everyone. Having said that there are a few guidelines that I use to help me structure a program where I can get the most out of these type of exercises, and in fact for all exercises. In this article, I will explain what these guidelines are and give some examples of how to do this yourself. Enjoy.
