When most of us think of the term stability, we think of exercises like planks to challenge the core or balance exercises to challenge our balance. While both of these examples are to some extent stability training it is so much more than that. True stability is all about being able to react with perfect reflexes to be able to maintain joint alignment ready for efficient and smooth movement. Also stability training is not just limited to the core, for all joints require stability, with some requiring more than others! Do We Rely Too Much On Scientific Research & Surgery To Fix Chronic Injuries?
One thing that has been a constant problem for me over the years is explaining to medical practitioners our methods for helping people to overcome serious injuries and regain their life. The very first thing they say is that there is no scientific research to support your findings. There has been several great books and articles that have explored this topic before which I will share in this article but I have posed this question as it relates more specifically to our training studio based in Melbourne Australia. Even though many of our programs and methods are based on research papers and studies, and we have hundreds of testimonials and even case studies that have proven these to work for a long time (over 20 years now), we are still looked upon as something of a rogue and not validated due to a lack of medical qualifications. Even Google rates my articles very poorly even when I can prove it works. Google has a hard time understanding how a particular injury can relate to so many things as they prefer to have an algorithm that gives a specialist answer. And unfortunately it is not just Google who thinks like this as this is the thinking applied by most people and is supported by research that also uses this same reasoning. I must make it clear we use scientific research all the time and most of our programs are based upon this, however, it is through practical application that all of our best solutions have been discovered. The importance of maintaining our flexibility or mobility of joints in order to move well is very important but just how is it best to do that. We have all been convinced that spending time holding static stretches is the best way and we should always do this before exercise to prevent any injuries. If there is one thing I have learned over the last 20 years of working in rehabilitation with people suffering severe injuries to elite athletes looking for sporting performance it is that there are no absolutes, there is no black and white, there is only a lot of grey area. And when it comes to stretching not only are many of the age old beliefs incorrect, but the exact opposite is what is required! But not always! This is definitely one of the most confusing topics to discuss, as many times I will contradict myself and say do not do this, and the very next minute I tell that is exactly what you should do! Unstable Balance Training – Useful Training Tool or Dangerous Gimmick?
The past 10-15 years balance training has really taken off in gyms as a part of gym training however it does spark a debate about the value of using exercises like this and more specifically the use of unstable balance training.
