If there is one thing that really does my head in, it is seeing people using fitness methods to solve what is really a health problem. Even worse is when they are advised to do this by a health professional or trainer. This is where someone uses cycling, running, swimming and various other fitness activities to rehabilitate the body from injury or improve overall health from disease or illness. Injury, illness, disease, even weight loss are all health problems needing a solution that addresses the cause of the problem and a plan that provides the body with optimal function and health to handle fitness endeavours. We must understand that health and fitness are not the same thing, and that you can never become fit until you become healthy first. In this article, I am going to explore several common approaches to injury and illness that people are using or being advised to do that are doomed for failure right from the start, and in some cases even contribute to making their condition worse or creating new problems bigger than the original one!
Here is a great case study example of a young guy who came to see us for help with a chronic neck and shoulder problem. We wanted to share this story of how we were able to very quickly help him turn his life around using exercises that many never even consider. Chronic neck and shoulder problems are extremely common with today's modern world of computers, smartphones and general lack of exercise and postural awareness. I see so many people who rely solely on massage, stretching and treatments to release trigger points and stiffness to get rid of their pain, but never do they consider finding the source of the pain, and finding the real solution that lies in learning to MOVE efficiently. This case study is a great example of how we were able to help a guy who had put up with chronic pain for years, seen several therapists for little or no result by simply improving his movement function, stability and strength.
Stroke is one of the world's biggest killers and a leading cause of disability. The high incidence of stroke seems to go unnoticed within the media, yet stroke kills more women than breast cancer and more men than prostate cancer. In 2017 there were more than 56,000 new and recurrent strokes – that is one stroke every nine minutes! In this article we will talk not only about how to prevent a stroke but also what you can, and NEED to do if you have already suffered one so you can get your life back.
